Cultural Differences & Cultural Privileges

Students created identiy / cultural posters in class.  Students then tried to analyze the poster of a peer whose identity was unknown to them. They tried to identify primary cultural characteristics of the artist based on the presentation of the poster: what is the artist’s race, class, gender, religion, cultural beliefs, lived experiences, etc.

Students then read and annotated an excerpt of Peggy McIntosh’s “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” & were asked to respond to the list of privileges as honestly as possible – focusing on 3-5 primary ones that resonated with them the most (positively or negatively).

Students will discuss privilege & race & culture on Monday prior to engaging readings on slavery, the Great Migration, and the Harlem Renaissance.
