Moral Perfection?

Today, you are going to write a short essay comparing the writings of Jonathan Edwards and Ben Franklin.

Start with an introduction giving some background information on the Puritans & the Rationalists.  This should be short and can come directly from your notes.  End your intro with a sentence that previews the two selections (include titles & authors).

The first body paragraph should start by summarizing the first piece you are looking at (include title & author).  In your own words, paraphrase the main ideas of the author. Include a quote or two to demonstrate his main ideas.  Make sure you follow the tag+quote+cite+explain format to cite evidence.

The second body paragraph should summarize the second piece you are looking at (include title & author).  In your own words, paraphrase the main ideas of the author. Include a quote or two to demonstrate his main ideas.  Make sure you follow the tag+quote+cite+explain format to cite evidence.

Your final body paragraph should compare/contrast the two authors.  Use quotes from each author to show their similarities / differences.  Try to use quotes in this paragraph that you didn’t use in previous paragraphs.  More savvy writers can compare and contrast throughout the body paragraphs.

Conclude by summarizing the main points in your essay.  End by telling me what we can learn from these authors / selections / philosophies and which is more helpful or reflective of modern day America.

Write in ink, on one side of the page, & double-space (skip every other line).  Due Friday 10/03/2014 at the end of class.
